About me and how I workI am in my late 50s with three adult children.I am a qualified counsellor with a diploma in counselling from The University of the West of England. I am BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy)Accredited Counsellor/Psytherapist. I have some experience of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and may use some of CBT ideas and ways of working if this feels appropriate. I have recently started to work as a volunteer on the Penny Brohn Cancer Care Help-line advising people who have a diagnois of cancer and their family and friends. This is informing my counselling work and understanding of the difficulties to be faced when people are living with cancer in their lives. I enjoy gardening and working with textiles and patchwork and mosaics. I am interested in mindfulness meditation and practice this myself. I find a regular meditation practice gives me support and a spiritual dimension to my life. (to find out about mindfulness meditationclick here) I have been to a counsellor myself and found it helpful both personally and in understanding things from the client's point of view. Experience and Training I began to train as a counsellor in the late 1980's following a personal experience of counselling to help with depression following the birth of my third child. I read the work of Carl Rogers and was drawn to the values of person centred counselling and psychotherapy. Rogers ideas were based on the belief we have within us the potential to grow and change and work through difficulties and that this can be helped by spending time with a therapist who will listen non-judgementally and with empathy. (For more information click here) I obtained my Diploma in Counselling at the University of the West of England (UWE). My theoretical base is Integrative Therapy. This brings together the ideas of Carl Rogers and psycho-dynamic theory which draws on the belief that the events of early childhood can have an impact on peoples feeling and thoughts in the present . (For more information about Integrative Therapy click here) Specialist areas of Work As well as working with the general issues outlined on my home page I have also developed experience in the field of drug and alcohol addiction and have worked at The Terence Higgins Trust with clients who are H.I.V. positive. I welcome clients who are struggling with these issues or their partners, families or friends. I also spent three years counselling students of all ages at U.W.E. as part of the counselling service at the University. Working with the difficulties arising from being a twin or parenting twins. I am interested in working with Dreams and encourage clients to bring dreams to the sessions. I am in a Jungian dream supervision group where we explore ways of working with client's dreams. I do not work with couples. If you are concerned about an issue that I haven't mentioned please give me a call to talk it through. My telephone number is 07749 716734.
